Account, login, admin, gameplay and individual shared-life pages are noindex and omitted from the XML sitemap. This file documents public editorial content and does not grant a license to reuse third-party material.

Your saves are private. Publishing is your choice; an ended public life can be remembered in the memorial.

Your country is drawn from a versioned statistical dataset. Each year, the simulation updates learning, work, relationships, health and savings. Decisions can change what happens next. Life expectancy describes a population, not a promise to any individual. Pause whenever you like; time does not advance while the page is hidden.

Guest saves are stored in browser IndexedDB. You can export and import versioned JSON saves. Email-code sign-in enables cloud saves and publishing; incompatible save versions are rejected. An already-loaded game can continue without a connection, but offline page refresh is not supported by a service worker. The daily challenge uses UTC. Pace presets are not a promise of exact play duration.

### What is 1 in 8 Billion?

1 in 8 Billion is a free browser life simulation game. Start with a randomly drawn birthplace and family, then make choices about learning, work, relationships and health as you live year by year.

### Is 1 in 8 Billion free to play?

Yes. The game is free to play, with no payments or paid advantages.

### Can I choose my country or family?

No. Your starting country and family circumstances are drawn for you. Later choices can include moving or migration when the game conditions allow it.

### How is my birthplace drawn?

By default, countries are weighted by annual births in the dataset. You can choose population weighting in game setup. The homepage chart only changes the explanation, not your game settings.

### Is the data real?

Birth, population and mortality data come from UN WPP 2024 estimates for 2023. Other indicators use World Bank data and documented estimates. Sources and limitations are listed on the data page; events are fictional game content.

### How long does a life take?

Choose a 30, 60 or 90 minute pace preset. Actual time depends on reading, decisions and lifespan. You can advance manually, pause, or use automatic choices. The game pauses when the page is hidden.

### Can I save my life in 1 in 8 Billion?

Choices and yearly results are saved in this browser. Clearing site data can remove them. Sign in for cloud saves and continue on another device; cloud conflicts keep both copies for you to choose.

### Do I need an account or an app?

No account or installation is needed to play. Email sign-in is needed for cloud saves, publishing, comments and remembrance interactions.

### Is my story public?

No. A private save does not publish itself. You must explicitly publish a life to share a public link. Downloading a PNG only saves an image; community text is reviewed before publication.

### Is this the official 1in8b.life?

No. 1in8billion.online is an independent project and is not affiliated with 1in8b.life.

### Who is this game suitable for?

It is intended for ages 15 and up. Stories may include illness, hardship, loss and death without graphic imagery. A gentle mode is available; adults should preview the game before using it with younger players.

### Which languages does 1 in 8 Billion support?

English, Thai, Simplified Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Vietnamese and French. Switching language does not change your character, choices or random results.

Births, population, fertility and mortality come from UN World Population Prospects 2024, using 2023 estimates. World Bank indicators help scale economic and education conditions. Stories, choices, income rules and behavior effects are fictional game models. Missing nonessential indicators use explicitly marked regional estimates.

Annual mortality is derived from grouped life tables. Survival is preserved at closed age-group boundaries. Ages 100 and over use a constant hazard approximation, with a simulation limit of 110. This is not a medical prediction.

Income is a game baseline derived from half of GDP per capita at purchasing-power parity. It is not an observed salary. Schooling is a game model derived from secondary enrollment, not measured average years of education.

Closed age groups: q(annual)=1-(1-q(group))^(1/n), preserves survival at group endpoints.

Open 100+ group: constant force of mortality from mx; simulation terminal age 110. This is an explicit model approximation.

Income game baseline = 0.5 × GDP per capita PPP, not observed earnings.

School-years game baseline = 6 + min(secondary gross enrollment,100) × 0.06, not observed mean schooling.

Missing WB indicators use within-region median with per-country source flags. No birth or mortality fallback.

Population and births are modeled dataset counts for 2023; life expectancy is in years. Birth share is relative to the covered dataset, not all possible territories worldwide. Income baseline is in game units and schooling is a game parameter. These are the same values displayed on country pages, not live statistics.

This policy describes the current features of 1in8billion.online, an independent browser life simulation for ages 15 and up. You can play without an account. Advertising and payments are disabled in this release.

### Guest play and device storage

Guest saves and imported legacy results are stored in IndexedDB on your device. Your language preference is stored in localStorage. Playing as a guest does not automatically upload your saves. Export a backup before clearing browser data; removing local saves or browser storage cannot be undone by us.

### Accounts, cookies and cloud saves

If you sign in, we process your email address, account identifier, verification records and session information. Essential authentication cookies keep you signed in. Cloud saves you upload are linked to your account and contain fictional game state, choices, seeds and timestamps. Do not include real personal or sensitive information in names, notes or imported files.

### Public stories and moderation

Publishing is optional. Published summaries, notes, memorials and approved comments can be read by other visitors and shared by link. Free text is reviewed before publication. Reports, moderation decisions and security records help prevent abuse. Copies already downloaded or shared by other people may remain outside our control after removal.

### Hosting, email and security services

Cloudflare hosts the service and D1 database. Where configured, Cloudflare Turnstile checks sensitive actions and Resend delivers sign-in emails. These providers process information needed for their role, such as network metadata, verification signals or your email address. Requests may be processed outside your country under the providers’ own privacy terms. We do not sell personal information.

### Optional visit analytics

On the production domain, Google Analytics 4 loads only after you allow it. It uses cookies and processes visit and device/network information to measure site usage; Google may process this information outside your country. We disable advertising storage and personalization and do not send game saves, email addresses or user-written content as analytics events. Initial page views omit URL query strings and fragments. Your choice is stored locally. Use Analytics preferences in the footer to decline or withdraw consent; withdrawal reloads the page and removes accessible Google Analytics cookies.

### Operational records and retention

IP addresses are used for short-lived rate limits and security checks. The client sends only an error category for game, save or sync failures; it does not attach saves, free text, email addresses, page URLs or stack traces to that report. Hosting logs may contain request metadata. Application cleanup removes expired sessions and verification records, rejected stories and comments older than 30 days, resolved reports older than 90 days and audit entries older than 180 days. Cleanup runs opportunistically on API activity, so removal is not guaranteed at the exact cutoff. Provider logs follow provider retention settings.

### Exporting and deleting your data

My lives provides account-data export and account deletion when signed in. Deletion removes linked cloud saves, published lives, comments and interactions; moderation audit entries can remain with an administrator identifier removed. Device-local saves must be removed separately. You can delete individual local or cloud saves from My lives. Signing out alone does not delete saved data.

### Age, changes and contact

The service is intended for people aged 15 and older. Do not create an account or submit personal information if you are below that age. We update this page when our practices change. Operator identity and a direct privacy contact have not yet been supplied for this pre-launch version; they must be published on the Contact page before public launch. These terms describe use of 1in8billion.online and its game and community features. Read them together with the Privacy policy. The current release is free to play and has no payments or paid advantages.

### Eligibility and accounts

The service is intended for ages 15 and up. Use an email address you control, keep sign-in codes private and take responsibility for activity through your account. Guest play does not require an account; cloud saves and publishing require sign-in.

### A fictional simulation

Characters, events, choices and their effects are game models. UN World Population Prospects 2024 and World Bank indicators inform fixed 2023 starting conditions for the covered countries and territories. Income and education values are derived game parameters. The game is not a prediction or medical, financial, legal or immigration advice. Population averages do not describe an individual’s worth or future.

### Community conduct

Do not publish real personal or sensitive information, harassment, hate, threats, unlawful material, spam or content that infringes another person’s rights. Do not bypass security checks, misuse accounts, disrupt the service or use automated activity to abuse community features. Use the report action to flag content concerns.

### Your submissions and moderation

You retain any rights you have in your original notes and comments. By submitting them, you allow us to store, review and display them as needed to operate the feature you choose. Publishing makes approved content available to others. We may reject, hide or remove content and suspend accounts for abuse. You can remove your published lives or delete your account. Other people may retain copies they previously shared or downloaded.

### Saved games and availability

Local saves depend on your browser and device. Export backups before clearing storage or moving devices. Cloud sync can encounter conflicts, and incompatible save versions may be rejected. We may change or interrupt features for maintenance or security. We do not promise uninterrupted access or permanent storage.

### Project content and third parties

The project is independent and is not affiliated with 1in8b.life, the United Nations or the World Bank. Third-party datasets, fonts and other materials retain their respective licenses and attribution requirements. Access to this website does not grant blanket rights to reuse its code, artwork or original writing. See Data & methodology for statistical sources and model limits.

### Limits, updates and contact

The service is provided as available. To the extent permitted by applicable law, we do not guarantee error-free simulations or recovery of lost saves. Nothing in these terms excludes rights or responsibilities that cannot lawfully be excluded. Changes to these terms will be shown here with an updated date. Operator identity and a direct support contact are pending for this pre-launch version and must be published on the Contact page before public launch.
